Vibe Coding Is Not About the AI. It's About You
Better prompts were never the answer. Better thinking was. The 4 human skills that separate builders who ship from builders who spiral.

Summary Points
- Vibe Coding is not about the AI — it is about the human behind it. You are building with AI. AI is not building for you.
- Four human skills : architecture first, context discipline, step-by-step planning, encoded standards
- Every Vibe Coding failure is a thinking failure, not a tool or AI failure.
- The AI builds. You architect, design, monitor, and guide. That is not prompting. That is human intelligence

The Reframe
Everyone talks about Vibe Coding as if the AI is the main character. It is not. You are.
You are building with AI. AI is not building for you.
The tools are secondary. Claude, Cursor, Copilot — they are execution tools. They work inside your thinking, not instead of it. The human behind them determines whether the output is good or garbage. That is not a limitation of the tools. That is the nature of building.
In the last year, I have built more with AI than at any other point in my career. And the single biggest lesson is this: the quality of what AI produces is a direct reflection of the quality of thinking you bring to it.
Here are the four human skills that separate builders who ship from
Principle 1 — Design Before You Delegate
Before a single prompt — design your services, your infrastructure, your environment.
Architecture is the set of decisions AI cannot make for you: service boundaries, data flows, infrastructure choices, and environment setup. These are judgment calls that require understanding the full picture — what you are building, why, and how the pieces fit together.
Claude and Cursor are execution tools. They work inside your architecture, not instead of it.
Practical: map your services first — Workflow, AI, Integration, Frontend. Define responsibilities. Then build.
Skip this step and AI builds fast. In the wrong direction. Confidently.
Principle 2 — You Are the Memory
AI has no memory between sessions unless you engineer it.
Your job: maintain the context document. Keep project knowledge current. Anchor every session to the current state of the build.
Claude Projects and Cursor Rules give you the system. You are the person who keeps it accurate. The discipline is simple but non-negotiable: update your context after every major decision. Not the AI's job. Yours.
Stale context produces stale output. Every time.
Principle 3 — One Step at a Time
The biggest Vibe Coding mistake: asking AI to build everything at once.
Real builds happen one service, one function, one validated decision at a time. Plan the step. Prompt for the step. Validate the output. Document. Move to the next.
AI is fastest when the task is narrow and the context is clear. Your planning determines both. The builders who move fastest are not the ones who prompt fastest — they are the ones who plan best.
Encode Your Standards
Claude Project Rules and Cursor Rules are not AI settings. They are your engineering standards, written down.
Best practices — modular code, no synchronous functions, docstrings, naming conventions — live in the rules so you never have to re-explain them. Every session starts with your standards already in place.
Example Cursor Rule: "Always use FastAPI. Never use synchronous functions. Prefer dependency injection. Comment all functions with docstrings."
Example Claude Rule: "You are a senior Python engineer. Never suggest time estimates. Ask one clarifying question before producing output."
Rules are human judgment, made persistent. Write them once. They shape every interaction.
The Through-Line
Every Vibe Coding failure I have seen — mine included — was a human discipline failure. Not an AI failure.
The architecture was missing. The context was stale. The planning was skipped. The standards were not set.
The tools did not fail. The thinking did.
The AI builds. You architect. You design. You monitor. You guide.
That is not prompting. That is human intelligence.
